Social media managers: Manage multiple Facebook, Twitter and Google+ accounts easily

If you haven't seen my individual posts on managing multiple Facebook, Twitter and Google+ accounts, here is a consolidated article that explains it all.

As a social media manager, I was able to manage my client's accounts with an excel in the beginning, since there were only few. It all started to fall apart as the client base grew. Opening the excel, finding the client and then entering the account details in the login pages of the relevant application made it a tedious and error prone process. Thus started the lookout for an app to make this better.

I was more than happy to see that there were extensions available to make this better, or even dead simpler than what I thought. Let us see them one by one. Bear on mind that all these extensions was found to be only available for Google chrome.

Save your eyes and spine from wear and tear due to frequent computer usage and avoid lower back pain

It is a known fact now that frequent computer use leads to the decrease in the strength of muscles and that eventually leads to problems that affect the whole body. Some part of the body is getting over utilized and strained, while other parts of the body weakens due to inactivity. They are collectively being called as Repetitive Strain Injury.

The parts of the body that gets mostly affected are:
1. Eyes
As you know, constantly glaring at that monitor for hours cause severe strain on the eyes. Eyes are designed to focus at different lengths and each time when you blink, it cleanses the eye. While in-front of computer, we often forget to blink and to look at different focal lengths.

This causes, reddishness in the eyes, Headache and eventually makes your eye loose its abilities. You will have to start using glasses to reduce the strain and to protect your vision.

2. Spine
Our spice is one of the most important element of our bone structure. It is designed to be flexible and muscles supports the whole spinal structure. Hours of inactivity makes the muscles weak and you will eventually starts to have lower back pains and even Disk prolapses, which is getting more and more common among Computer users.

3. Hand/Fingers/Legs:
Mind you, that all these body parts were designed to do a lot of activity and this is how our body has been evolved over the past hundreds of years. Now, suddenly, there were thrown in to idleness. When added with the scenario that they were being used at uneven and unsuitable postures, the blood flow gets affected and there are cases when the users had to amputate the body parts.

Prevention:
You might have heard the expression "Prevention is better than Cure". You won't know how significant and important this is, until you get affected in any way by any of the problems mentioned above.

Below are the items that i know, to prevent the above problems from happening.

1. Do regular exercises. No matter how busy your schedule is, find time to spend some time for walking/jogging. This will help to maintain the blood pressure and sugar levels in check.
2. Try to stay away from computers during the weekend, whenever possible. At least, try to reduce the time that you spend in accessing the computers, during the weekend.
3. During the computer usage, install plugins like eyeCare, that can remind you to take break at regular intervals. This will be good for your eyes to protect your vision using 20-20-20 rule, and for your whole body, based on how you configure it.

Receive Desktop Notifications from multiple Facebook pages in Google Chrome

As i mentioned in my other post before, fbQuickLogin has been an extension for quickly signing me in to my Facebook account and i'm loving it so far. This article is particularly about an interesting new feature - the ability to show desktop notifications from the Facebook feeds, and that too from your various Facebook pages that you admin, separately.

Yes, i know there some of you might be wondering what is special here. Ok, Assume that you have a Facebook account and you want to get notifications from your single account. For this, there are various notifiers out there, fbQuickLogin does that too.

Now, Imagine that you are having multiple Facebook pages, that you administrate. For example, if you own a company which has 4 products, you might end up having 4 different Facebook pages for each of those products. You will be getting notifications from Facebook, as an admin. But, if you want to see separate notifications for each of those pages, it is cumbersome to go in to each of those pages and see the notifications.

fbQuickLogin makes this super-easy. Once you login to each of these pages, grab the Feed URLs from these pages, as shown in the video below. Then, configure them once in fbQuickLogin and you are all set. This tiny extension will sit there and wait for notification messages. As a user, i can change the frequency at which the notification feeds has to be checked for updates. I can also configure to notify me by a sound. How's that!

Here are the videos that you might want to check out.

How to detect rendering mode (Standard, Quirks) of a web page using Javascript or jQuery

Often, there will be times when you want to detect the rendering mode of the web page, especially when you are dealing multiple web projects. This can be easaily done using Javascript by checking for the documentMode property available for the document object.

If you are using jQuery, just use:

alert(jQuery.support.boxModel);

Using raw JavsScript, you can use any of the below methods:

alert(document.documentMode);

alert('You are in ' + (document.compatMode==='CSS1Compat'?'Standards':'Quirks') + ' mode.');

Here is a method provided in MSDN article, more tended towards Internet Explorer.

var engine;
if (document.documentMode) // IE8 or later
      engine = document.documentMode;
   else // IE 5-7
   {
      engine = 5; // Assume quirks mode unless proven otherwise
      if (document.compatMode)
      {
         if (document.compatMode == "CSS1Compat")
            engine = 7; // standards mode
      }
      // There is no test for IE6 standards mode because that mode
      // was replaced by IE7 standards mode; there is no emulation.
   }

   alert(engine);
